Orthopedic specialists at OSF St. Joseph ‘made me feel like a new man’

After dealing with chronic joint pain in his right hip for several years, Cranston Sparks knew it was time to consider surgery.

The 57-year-old Bloomington financial consultant began seeing orthopedic surgeonDr. Lucas ArmstrongatOSF HealthCare Medical Group – College Avenue2 ½ years ago for his end-stage osteoarthritis.

“I had terrible pain. It was hard to get around and the pain was affecting my lifestyle,” Cranston said. “The doctor said there was bone on bone by the time it was determined I needed a hip joint replacement.”

Make the decision to have surgery

“I had been going through therapy quite a bit for the last two years and it was just the last straw. I said enough therapy,” Cranston said. “And while nobody wants to have surgery, a number of family members have had hip surgery in the past, and I knew how good the results can be.”

He underwent hip replacement surgery atOSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Centerlast December and left the hospital feeling great and walking. He met with a physical therapist two to three times a week – the first two weeks at home.

“After surgery, I can’t say enough for the treatment I received at the hospital – it was superb. I recall being wheeled into the hospital room and the nurse, Anina Englehorn, made me feel very comfortable – she kept me calm, cool and collected,” Cranston said. “Erin Rogers (the orthopedic service line leader at OSF St. Joseph) made it her priority to come see me how I was doing while in I was in the hospital. She said ‘You got this, you’re going to be walking in no time.’ And sure enough I was.

“They made me feel like a new man,” Cranston said of the caregivers. “The therapist I had, Kuntal Patel, I wouldn’t trade for the world. I highly recommend OSF – the doctors, the nurses, everyone.”
